Photo storage subscriptions add up quickly. I already had a few monthly subscriptions, and I didn’t want to add another one just to back up photos. At the same time, I didn’t feel comfortable relying on my phone alone.
So I set up a simple backup routine that doesn’t cost anything monthly.
Once a month, I back up my photos to an external hard drive. I plug it into my computer, copy the photos over, and that’s it. It’s not automatic, but it’s reliable, and I like knowing exactly where my files are.
For cloud storage, I’m more selective. Instead of backing up every single photo, I only upload the important ones — family photos, travel pictures, and anything I wouldn’t want to lose. This keeps cloud storage usage low without giving up peace of mind.
Folder organization made a bigger difference than I expected. I sort photos by year and month, which makes future backups faster and much less overwhelming. When everything is already organized, backing up doesn’t feel like a chore.
This system isn’t fancy, but it works. I don’t pay a monthly fee, my photos are backed up in more than one place, and I don’t worry about running out of storage all the time.
