At one point, my phone was buzzing almost constantly. Messages, app updates, reminders, promotions — everything felt urgent, even though most of it really wasn’t. I noticed I was checking my phone far more often than I needed to, mostly out of habit.
I didn’t want to turn notifications off completely, though. I still needed important alerts like messages, banking notifications, and calendar reminders. So instead of disabling everything at once, I decided to clean things up more intentionally.
The first thing I did was go through notifications app by app. I started with the apps I used the least. Many of them were sending notifications I never actually opened. Turning those off immediately reduced the noise.
Next, I grouped apps by category. Messaging apps stayed fully enabled. Financial and security-related apps stayed on as well. Everything else had to earn its place. If a notification wasn’t time-sensitive, I turned it off.
I also disabled notification previews on the lock screen. Not seeing the full message helped reduce the urge to pick up my phone every time it buzzed.
One feature that helped more than I expected was Scheduled Notification Summary. Instead of getting alerts all day, non-urgent notifications now show up at specific times. I still see them — just not constantly.
After a few days, the difference was obvious. I was checking my phone less often, but I wasn’t missing anything important. Notifications started feeling useful again instead of stressful.
